Did you travel anywhere fun in June? You’re not alone—roughly half of Americans traveled at least 100 miles from home on a trip last month, according to new data from Start.io.

Using data from an anonymized sample of more than 150 million mobile devices in the U.S., Start.io found that a little over 1% of Americans were long-distance travelers in June, traveling more than 1,000 miles from home.

For Americans who traveled internationally last month, their two most popular destinations were Canada and Mexico.

Not surprisingly, trips to Canada were most popular among travelers from the northern border states of Maine, Vermont, Michigan, Montana, and New Hampshire. Similarly, trips to Mexico were most popular with travelers from states on and near the southern border: Arizona, New Mexico, California, Nevada, and Colorado.

Outside of Canada and Mexico, other top international destinations included Singapore, Australia, Japan, the United Kingdom, and South Korea.

Where do Americans fly internationally?

The data suggests that Americans are more likely to travel to international destinations that are easy to get to from their home city.

For example, roughly 15% of long-distance travelers from Hawaii visited Japan in June. Direct flights from Honolulu to Tokyo take a little over 8 hours and cost around $700 round-trip on several major carriers. The data suggests Hawaiians are more likely to visit Asia than they are Europe or the Caribbean, because Asia is cheap and easy to get to.

By comparison, the Dominican Republic is a popular destination for travelers from Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, and Massachusetts, where flights are cheap and plentiful. For example, New Yorkers can fly to Punta Cana for less than $400 round-trip, on a flight that takes just 4 hours.
